Chapter 6

It wasn’t until they’d hailed a cab and were settled in the worn-out seats that Romeo’s features rearranged into their customary secretive half smile. Julian had never noticed him dump the glass but it was gone.

“I just hope you didn’t leave finger prints,” he muttered. The corner of Romeo’s mouth twitched. “What if I did?” “You— Right. The same set you left on that mug the first time

you came to visit me?” Romeo brushed his knuckles against Julian’s thigh. “Not the same but something like the French equivalent.”

“Clever boy. You didn’t just take that glass to hide the jewels in, you’re also giving them someone to pursue by planting false evidence. I really shouldn’t be surprised.”

“Well, I’m not actually planting evidence that will be used against someone, you know. I don’t like framing innocent people.”

“Hmm.”

“What?”

“Never mind.”

“Don’t give me any of that. What is it?” Romeo’s eyes were narrowed as he regarded Julian with a sideways glance.

“What about the model? Won’t she be in trouble for letting herself be charmed and then robbed that easily?”

Romeo shrugged. “Why should she be? Her job was to wear the necklace and make it look good, not to protect it. That’s what the security guys were there for.”

“Hmm. Well, I just hope the people who hired her see it that way, too. Anyway, what did you say to her to begin with?”

“You look thirsty.”

“What?”

“Yeah.”

Julian laughed, despite the mild resentment he still felt. “Jeez, that’s the worst chat-up line ever.”

Unruffled, Romeo leaned in. “It worked, didn’t it? So I guess it wasn’t that bad after all.”

Julian sobered up quickly. “It did work, but how it did is beyond me. Did you hypnotize her?”

Romeo grinned, suddenly more cheerful. “Something like that. She just wanted someone to see more than the mermaid who carried the jewels. I gave her the attention she craved, that’s all.”

“You’re scarily good at reading people,” Julian muttered. “Remind me to remember that next time I try to resist your manipulations.”

Romeo’s relaxed half smile vanished. “I don’t manipulate you, Jules.”

“Huh. Of course you do. Maybe not on quite the same level as you make all those other people do your beckoning, but you do.”

“What is this really about?” Romeo’s voice had gone cold.

“It’s about you using people. You use them with very little regard for the consequences it has for them. Take Barnes for instance. You framed him. Well, maybe not framed him, but you set him up nonetheless.”

“Jeez, are you serious? Barnes? This is what this is about? We’ve been through it, Jules.”

“No. No, we haven’t been through it, actually.

“Shit.” Romeo sighed. “So you don’t like my methods.”

“Not really, no. I know you said he’d cheated to get his job with the FBI, and that shouldn’t go unpunished, but you just considered it leverage you could use against him.”

“Well, yeah. That’s why I picked him. Because he had something I could use.”

“You ruined his life, Romeo.”

Romeo’s eyes were cold but he refrained from answering when the taxi came to a halt in front of their hotel.
